Mike,

Usually with Compaq, at startup (just after the white block cursor jumps
to the upper right corner) press F10 for setup.

You will need to (if you haven't already done so) configure the 16Bit
ISA NIC as an add-in card. Pick the IRQ and I/O and key it in. Then
boot to DOS and configure the 16Bit ISA NIC with the NIC setup disk to
match what you keyed in to the BIOS. I usually pick IRQ 10 and I/0 300.

I'm having a heck of a time configuring a CTX Pentium 166 to read a 3Com
Etherlink 16BIT ISA card that I'm pretty sure is configured correctly.
The 3Com utility checks out fine. I've also tried a Linksys that can be
"ne2000" compatible and that didn't work either. So, I share your
frustration. Also, this CTX dials out on the 56K modem but times out
shortly thereafter. This is my client's CTX and I'm thinking of digging
up 486 box to try again.

All in all, I'm having pretty good luck with 486 boxes. I've setup
three 486 boxes with no trouble. I wonder if you aren't going too gain
much by moving to the P166/48MB ram. Does anybody else agree?

I'm anxious to see if you can solve this. I've had one HP Pentium and
one Compaq Deskpro work OK. And now this CTX? I think there are enough
quirky differences between motherboards/nic/STN to cause trouble in some
cases, like this CTX and your Presario.

Suggestion: keep the 486 box on STN. Put a cheap hard drive in the
Presario and load Red Hat, Caldera or Suse Linux and setup a Linux
workstation to play with.

Good Luck,
Arnie
