I can only guess based on experience, John, but the STN acts as a 'caching'
DNS controller for "outside" names. That means it needs to get its info
from another "upstream" DNS server, however once the STN box has that info
it'll keep in memory (volatile) until the info either dies (TTL expires) or
you reboot the STN box.
STN has a 'authoritative' DNS built in, but that's only for 'inside' your
net (black)not the internet side (red).
I suppose there is a limit to the amount of DNS data that could be hashed in
memory, but I suspect that limit is so high you'll not bang against it in a
typical install.
My suggestion would be to set your client boxen's DNS settings pointing at
your STN box and that alone. Then have your STN box pointing at your ISP...
Should work best... Of course, your mileage may vary...

Subject: RE: [ShareTheNet] 25 users on school network
Hi JB
Thanks for your input. I am using DHCP and in my DNS search order I have
my STN box listed first then my 2 isp listings. What I see is once a site
is visited when DNS lookup is required for a return visit my STN box is
much faster. I know that STN is a small program that under the floppy boot
method runs in RAM only, so how much DNS info does it store? Up to RAM
capacity? If so it would stand to reason that on a constantly up STN
gateway more RAM would be better? Do you have any knowledge about adding
DNS info to the built in DNS server? In your experience have you
transferred the program to a hard drive or do you just run it from
floppy? Thanks Again JB.....John...
