You don't have communication between the STN and the router. Since you have
a crossover cable, do you have link lights on the NIC in the STN or on the
router?(it's possible the router has a normal - crossover switch for it's
ethernet port)
If you have link lights, then it's probable the NIC in the STN box. Either
not configured correctly or defective. The ping to the external address in
the STN, does NOT test the NIC because the packet doesn't pass through the
NIC. For testing, you might want to connect a Win98 client directly to the
router, so that you are certain that ethernet port is working correctly.

maybe I should have been clearer, a cross-over is already in use between STN
and the router

If you don't have a hub with a cross over port between the router and the
STN box, you need a crossover cable. Pin 1 to 3, pin 2 to 6, pin 3 to 1,
ping 6 to 1.

Subject: [ShareTheNet] DSL and Router
I am trying to configure share the net to work with our DSL line and Cisco
1605 router
the DSL is plugged to port 0 of the router, and port 1 is plugged to my
external nic n the STN box
the router's ip is x.x.65.1 and my ISP said to use the subnet
255.255.255.224
on the STN I have set the external ip to x.x.65.2, mask 255.255.255.224,
gateway x.x.65.1
internal net is set to ip 192.168.30.101, subnet 255.255.255.0, name srv
(blank)
my Win98 client is ip 192.168.30.x, subnet 255.255.255.0, gate
192.168.30.101, DNS 192.168.30.101
what happens is that on my win 98 box I can ping 192.168.30.101 and x.x.65.2
(stn's internal and external ip's) but pinging to the router (x.x.65.1)
times out
I trying to ping the router from STN diagnostics terminal and it also times
out.
I have not tried this setup with out the router in place
I am thinking that the router is messing things up, and wondering if I have
to add a route to the router on the STN machine.
Any ideas as to what to do?
