I found that I have to run FTP in passive mode to connect behind firewalls like STN.

Subject: [ShareTheNet] ftp server
I am running share the net, and I wanted to run an ftp server on a machine
on my internal network.
I got a great little ftp server app, and because I wanted to run it on a non
standard port, I enabled the user configurable port 3254 to be watched by
share the net, and forwarded to my machine on the internal net. On the
internal machine I have the ftp server on 3254, and everything works fine
internally. Externally, I have wierd results. Most people can access the
ftp server just fine, but a few are only able to log in, but then cannot get
a directory listing. Interestingly enough, one of these people is also
behind a share the net computer, and one is not.
I did a little reading and thought that i might need to enable the port
below 3254 (namely port 3253) to be open, because I thought that the ftp
server might be trying to communicate on that port. I also tried enabling
port 20, neither worked. I have also taken a good look at the ftp clients
being used to see if the problem is there. I have had everyone use the same
client, and still the same problem occurs on some, but not others. I have
also tried passive mode on and off.
Thanks for any help,
Max
