If your area's Road Runner doesn't require you to authenticate before
letting your packets into the Internet, then you don't need to worry about
it. Most areas don't need this anymore. If it does, you would've been
given a disk with something called RoadRunner Manager that you would need to
run each time you want to use the service.
Now if does....it get's a little bit more complicated. You need to find out
the name of the authentication service and find out what its IP address is.
Then what I did was create an entry in the local DNS server for this IP
address and put the name I gave it into this field. The other is to
configure you system to use Road Runner's DNS servers (since before
authentication you won't be able to query the root servers for the IP
address of the logon-server [the name Columbus used]).
Columbus used to require it, as did a few other areas, so that's why the
option is there.
Nothing is filled out in my DHCP box....
On the External Tab, I just have the network card Type/address/IRQ and the
DHCP provides network info box checked.
Only problems I've had have been Road Runner related (things like their DHCP
server being down or giving out addresses that their routers won't pass).
