What is the OS of the workstations? Have you checked the ip addresses that
the workstations are getting and that all parameters are correct? Any error
messages on the STN computer?
What is the topology of your network? (twisted pair? coax? hubs?) Can the
workstations talk to each other when the STN box is down?

But no, I have the STN DHCP running and DNS running so it's not possible to
have 2 the same IPs on the network. Hardware problem could be, but I have
the problem with 3 computers on the network.One of them can connect to the
internet through the gateway/router but as soon as client #2 comes online on
the network only (so no external requests) the whole router goes down after
aprox. 15 minutes or so and stays down for a few hours (rebooted everything,
disconnected all clients from the switch, etc)

This could be easily caused by putting the same IP address in both clients.
When #2 comes online, an IP address conflict is detected and both machines
will turn off their IP stacks...
It could also be a hardware problem, where you have a bad NIC in #2 and it
is in stuck in streaming mode(continously transmitting). It can also be
caused by bad cabling.

I have an 486DX4-100 8mb with 2 3c509s as an STN router connected to my
cablemodem. With one client everything works fine, but as soon as client no.
2 comes online on the netwerk the whole internet connection goes downe. I
reboot the STN server, it gets an IP from the cable DHCP server but from the
network I can ping to the external IP of the STN router so that connection
is fine but I can't ping to the 'outside'. How can I solve this, and what
causes this problem?
