I don't think "ident" is the solution in this case.
You are absolutely right that some IRC clients need "ident" turned
on. Specifically, I think that it is certain IRC server that use "ident" to
make sure you are who you say you are.
I opened the "ident" port when using mIRC to connect to some IRC servers,
which worked as you say.
However, from what I can see and some things I've read, talkcity.com's chat
server tries to connect to other ports to identify you. I doesn't appear to
use "ident" (port 113). I just tried talkcity with the ident port open and
with mIRC ident "server" enabled, but I'm still getting "connection
refused" messages.
So I'm still stuck.
Any help appreciated.
