It's the NIC.

I was using an Intel EtherExpress Pro (10 baseT - ISA), and got these 
messages too - especially if the traffic was high. (like you said)

Actually, I suspect a driver issue - but I have no idea how to go about 
re-compiling a new NIC driver for STN (I tried this with a SOHO version 
of the "tulip" chipset - that needs some tweeks to work correctly - and 
I could not get it to work.  Maybe I need to downgrade a box to RH 5.1 
or so??)
