I have noticed something interesting about my STN connection to my cable
provider... it seems to be quite "chatty".
My config: STN set up on both sides as static IP.
No DNS (I do DNS somewhere else)
No DHCP (I do that somewhere else too)
Nothing fancy.
Basically, all I do is gateway and NAT.
I noticed that there seems to be a lot of traffic (as shown by the
flickering "activity" light on my cable modem), even when there should
be no activity happening.
To isolate it, I have turned off everything else on my network, and even
un-plugged the "inside" network cable from the STN box. Still a lot of
traffic.
If I shut down (turn off) the STN box, the modem is as quiet as a grave.
Once I let STN back up - the activity resumes. Even if it is the only
thing connected.
The "logging" screens show nothing.
What in God's Holy Name could be causing all the "chattyness?"
I watch it, all alone on the net, chattering away like a blue-jay.
Any ideas on what this is, how to find out, or what to do?
Jim
