Dear Sharity Users,
we have released Beta 4 for Sharity 2.7 today. We recommend upgrading to all
Mac OS X users who experience deadlock problems. This version should fix all
possible deadlocks. The new NFS3 frontend is considered stable on Mac OS X.
For all other Unixes we have done various fixes for the NFS3 frontend since
Beta 3, but we still can't be completely sure that it works on all platforms
as expected. There was surprisingly little feedback for Beta 3.
We still can't recommend Beta 4 for production servers, but we ask everyone
who has some spare time for testing: Please install Beta 4 on your computer.
We rely on YOUR feedback to make this product as stable as possible. It's
too late to report problems if 2.7 final is out!
If you install this beta, please report your experiences (both: good AND
bad) to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
If you find problems, please verify whether they are related to the new NFS
3 frontend or not. You can switch back to the old NFS 2 module by editing
the file sharity.cfg (in /usr/local/sharity/etc on most Unix platforms).
Search for "nfs3" and change the "SortPrecedence" parameter for the nfs3
module from 2000 to 500, then restart Sharity.
This beta also fixes some of the known bugs in Sharity 2.6:
Mac OS X only:
- Should fix ALL deadlock problems now. Beta 3 was not very good at this.
- GUI will not crash if started automatically under heavy load.
All platforms:
- Improved browsing compatibility (even more than in Beta 3).
- DNS lookups are now done in background. This improves responsiveness
with slow DNS servers.
- Fixed a special case bug where opening a file for append could create a
big "hole" in the file.

A new installation will delete all your settings (such as servers you have
configured, parameters you have changed and so on). If you want to save your
old settings, please save the file cfgdb.ppl (in the directory
/usr/local/sharity/var on most Unix platforms,
/Library/StartupItems/Sharity/var on Mac OS X) and restore it after the
upgrade. Stored passwords and the license code will be lost in any case,
there is no way to save them. You will have to re-enter this data after the
upgrade.
