I'm currenly investigating the use of Sharity to provide file service to
untrusted Linux clients from Sun/Solaris file servers. While digging
around, I found several mentions of the CIFS Extensions for UNIX systems
(among others as future work on the Sharity web site). They would clearly
enhance Sharity's usability as a full-featured network file system.
The current spec is available from
http://www.snia.org/English/Collaterals/Presentations/20000524_CIFS/Byron_Deadwiler_Paper.doc
A modified version of samba 2.0.6, delivered as HP's CIFS/9000 Server
product, is described at
http://www.unixsolutions.hp.com/products/cifs.html
and available for download from
http://www.software.hp.com/
It contains the source in addition to HP/UX binaries, as required by the
GPL.
HP's CIFS/9000 Client is obviously a modified version of Sharity, enhanced
to implement the Unix extensions. As the latest Sharity beta doesn't
contain those mods yet (but some preliminary support for those extensions),
I'd like to know about plans to integrate them. Given enough time, I may
even start implementing them myself, but clearly would like to duplicate
work.
Another interesting enhancement present in CIFS/9000 Client is integration
with pam_ntdom: it allows access to CIFS shares without explicit invocation
of cifslogin, enabling the use of CIFS shares e.g. as home directories.
Is a similar pam module/Sharity integration available in source form yet?
