Transmission input shaft bearings have gone bad or
teeth on the gears have been damaged.  

In a perfect transmission, there should be darn near
no noise when letting the clutch out.  The clutch is
not the cause of the noise.

Unless you have it in gear, let the clutch out, and
the engine does not die, then you have a really
serious problem inside the transmission.
