Subject: Karbala in Karachi Rehearsed...Special Report
To: baqarrizvi.l...@gmail.com

As the new solar year starts world is undoubtedly aware that our Shi’a
community in Pakistan has been rocked with attacks during the first few days
of Muharram. The largest attack took place during the 10th Muharram Ashura
procession commemorating the tragedy of Karbala, with a terrorist
organization taking credit for the cowardly suicide mission. Additional
attacks had already occurred on the 8th and 9th of Muharram at Paposh Nagar,
Distt. Central and Qasba Colony, Distt. West in Karachi. Due to the
developing unrest in Pakistan and the several incidents of terrorism, IMI
Karachi set up an Emergency Control Center by 7th of Muharram headed by Dr
Arif Naqvi who appointed Dr. Fakhir Raza as head of IMI’s Rescue team.

*Aftermath of Bomb Blast*

On the 8th of Muharram, a bomb blast occurred at Paposh Nagar, Distt.
Central, Karachi at 8.40 pm. Within minutes, Dr. Fakhir Raza, Head of IMI
rescue team arrived at Abbassi Shaheed Hospital’s Emergency with a team of
IMI doctors, Dr. Mudasir, Dr. Shafquat and Dr. Hadi reached, and helped the
duty doctors in resuscitation and first aid for the 22 patients brought into
hospital. Three of the patients were discharged from the ER after
treatment, and the other 19 were admitted, including a boy who was shifted
to the OR for major abdominal surgery.
A second bomb blast happened on the 9th of Muharram at Qasba Colony, Distt.
West, Karachi, and a team of IMI Doctors headed by Dr. Fakhir rushed Abbassi
Shaheed Hospital again to provide additional assistance. The team managed
patients with the help of the duty doctors, and stayed with them till all of
the injured underwent emergency treatment and were admitted into wards as
necessary.
On the 10th of Muharram, at 4:22 pm (Karachi time), as IMI was closing its
Blood Donation & Surgical camps, a very strong bomb exploded at M. A. Jinnah
Road. Immediately all of IMI’s doctors rushed to Civil Hospital (CHK), and
Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), and started the management of
severely injured peoples. Dr. Shafquat and Dr. Ali Ammar with some other IMI
doctors were managing care at JPMC and Dr. Aqeel Moosa, Dr. Fakhir, Dr.
Mudasir, and Dr. Saadat were managing patients at CHK. As patients were
shifted from CHK & JPMC to other medical institutions, IMI doctors also
divided themselves into other teams to follow the patients to the new
locations. Dr. Aqeel Moosa, Dr. Fakhir, Dr. Mudasir, and Dr. Saadat
continued onto Agha Khan University Hospital (AKU) to care for the 51
patients sent there. IMI doctors also moved to Liaquat National Hospital to
care for the 23 patients transferred there. Dr. Hadi Imam was at Abbassi
Shaheed Hospital where 7 injured were also brought. Unfortunately, 3
injured patients expired at AKUH and one passed away at JPMC. The number of
the total shaheed currently stands at 44, with 119 injured.

After meeting Dr. Saadat and Dr. Ali Ammar visited JPMC. 3 patients from
JPMC were brought into AKUH by Dr.Saadat and 2 were admitted in AKUH.
Unfortunately, due to the unavailability of resources, one of the three was
shifted to LNH. Dr. Arif Naqvi, Dr. Fakhir, Dr. Mudasir and Samar Abbas
also visited all of the patients individually at AKUH and LNH.
As of December 31st, the current status of patients in Karachi stands as
follows:
JPMC 4 patients
CHK Only one boy with a palate injury
LNH 12
AKUH 32
ASH 4

During this time of immense need, IMI has been the main body coordinating
all emergency treatment for victims of blast, resuscitation efforts,
coordinating with city doctors in emergencies of all major hospitals and
making sure that all victims receive appropriate treatment, including any
surgical or intensive care as necessary. IMI has also setup a permanent cell
with mobile numbers for any untoward incident that may happen and is
monitoring the situation in liaison with other organizations, ulema, and
Imambargah trusts, etc. Furthermore, IMI through its contacts in all major
teaching and private hospitals is ensuring that all money allocated by the
government is judiciously expended on the victims care.
During all of this, IMI Karachi also continued its normal Muharram
activities including setting up medical and surgical camps and the IBTMS
blood donation centers. From the 1st to the 9th of Muharram 2 medical camps
were set up during majalis, one at Imambargah Shohda-e-Karbala, Ancholi
under supervision of Dr. Hadi Imam, and a second at Mehfil-e-Murtaza PECHS,
under the direction of team leader Dr. Hasnain Mujtaba. Two surgical camps
were also set up. On the night of Ashura in Ancholi, Karachi, a surgical
camp was set up, headed by Dr.Hadi Imam with more than 10 doctors providing
stitching & dressings of wounds of 96 Azadaran. On 10th.Moharram from 8 am
to 4 pm at Numaish hundreds of matamdar were brought in for stitching &
dressings. Senior & junior doctors provided services at this camp. Blood

As a final note, recognizing that the lack of security and rule of law is a
major impediment in developing the society in a progressive manner, IMI
condemns the unlawful activities that have occurred in the aftermath of the
blasts. No law-abiding citizen should resort to arson, looting, etc. We
remind the general public of the nefarious designs of the vested
interests and their masters) who are at the brim of their historic and
crushing defeat in the days ahead. It is the promise of Allah that blood of
martyrs shall not go in vain. IMI joins all Shia Organizations in
condemning the unnecessary violence and exhorting the government to take all
necessary steps to ensure safety of Muharram Juloos, Majalis-e Aza, Mosques,
and other places of worship. IMI stands with the nation as their Medical
Wing during this trying time. Please do not hesitate to write to us. IMI
HQ has and will continue to extend all possible help to IMI Karachi and IMI
Pakistan in this hour of trial and IMI’s UN axis is sending letters to the
United Nations, UNHCHR, Amnesty International and the Ambassador of Pakistan
to US to voice our concerns on the tragedy.
