More notes on my own question: I seem to have perl 5.8.8 installed, but I can't find sendmail.pm anywhere - not sure it's installed correctly.
So if shinken is using sendmailservices.pl to send email, and I don't have
sendmail.pm installed OR configured, I need to install that?
What version of Perl does Shinken need?

Ok, this may be slightly clueless
I followed the quickstart, but I don't see where you configure the SMTP server
address, account to use, etc.
I get that we shouldn't build this into shinken per
http://www.shinken-monitoring.org/wiki/official/thebasics-notifications but it
seems like I should specify this stuff somewhere. I gather it uses the
sendmail function built into sendmailservices.pl but I'm guessing this is some
kind of O/S setup?
Do I have to setup sendmail from the O/S side?
I'm using Oracle Enterprise Linux, which is mostly like RedHat, and it's a
purpose built VM.
