As the error message says - it cannot find the parent (I know it might be a bit cryptic if you don't know what causes the problem). Are you trying to build just shiro-root or perhaps have installed shiro-root in your local repo? In either case, if you are following Maven best practices, you are already using a Maven proxy repo. The simplest solution is to add http://repository.apache.org/snapshots/ to your list of proxied repositories. If you want to build locally, you also need to build the parent at least once (or every time it changes).
