So you do a spiral wrap around the straw. I assume?  what did you use for a ram rod? A simple 3/8" wood dowel?

Spiral wrap with one index finger width between spirals.  My ramrod is made from an old steel shaft with a piece of grip on the end and a wrap of yellow tape to mark the depth of insertion. I made a simple tool to wrap the straw - 5 turns of the crank handle and it's done. Make about one every 30 seconds. Sort of like an old whipping machine, fly tying machine. Don't make a big deal out of it, I know a guy who cuts 4" lengths of foam pipe insulation into strips and rams them into his shafts. Other guys use corks. Some duplicate Sims shock relief inserts (too much work for me).
