The single most conclusive way to test a club is through empirical means. Both I and no doubt the vast majority of clubmakers here have built the "perfect" club, tested it every way possible and found it unhittable. As I said, SW is but a small factor in the overall scheme. Somehow, way back in the past, someone decided that "D-2" is/was the ideal SW. I don't dare to try to recall all the customers I've had who insisted they "needed" a D-2 SW for all clubs. No matter how many times I challenged golfers to tell me the difference by feel between say, D2 and D3, virtually every one of them insisted that they had to have a pre-determined SW for their clubs. That still happens to this day. In fact, while playing last Wednesday, one of my partners asked to try out my latest set of irons. His first comment? "Wow, these are really head heavy, what's the SW - must be about D-6, huh? Man, I could never hit clubs with that kind of SW." When I told him the SW was D1 he didn't believe me. I had to take the clubs and the partner to the golf shop, place the clubs on their SW scale, and prove it. The guy then said he'd probably be able to hit the clubs as long as he knew what the SW was!
So, make your own blindfold test. Hit some clubs - drivers, irons, whatever, and choose one that feels right. Check the SW. That's probably the one for you.
