The same shaft cut 3 inches longer will play softer. You have the right idea that by cutting from the stiffest part which is the butt, should make it softer but you are also shortening it at the same time and the two combined are about a wash.
I suppose you could put yourself in some configuration of tipping one shaft hard and not butt trimming and have it longer than one that was butt trimmed enough to be shorter than the first and have the longer one stiffer but I really can't swear to that outcome.
