Why would I "flame" you? You did exactly what I
would have done; you made the obviously intelligent decision to do the
search, and then you shared the the info resulting from your efforts to the
list.
Congratulations on your perspicacity.

Subject: RE: ShopTalk: 42" Scotchbrite
belts???
OK....before TFlan flames me...I went on to google and found a place
that has 2"x42" scotchbrite belts. Looks like minimum order is 10, and
they are $13.73 each. They also have 1"x42" for $8.99, again 10
minimum. Here's the contact info... Anybody wanna go in on some of
the 2" belts? I get up to Ft. Worth from time to time...and I know where
this location is. Never been there, but I drive right past it to get to
my parents' house. Royce

I
also have a Craftsman...I'm using a Scotchbrite belt I got at Golfsmith a
few years ago before they stopped carrying them...I don't remember exactly
how I did it, but I "modified" the upper wheel mount to make room for the
belt to pass. It's tight, but works fine.
When I got the Craftsman lots of folks (including the instructors at
the GS school) told me that it wouldn't work. The machines you get
from GS, GW, and DC are all 1725 rpm, and the Craftsman is 3450 rpm, so they
said it was too fast. Turns out that the driver wheel on the other
models is just about twice the size of the driver wheel on the Craftsman, so
that the belt speed is pretty close to the same. I like to use long
(3/4" or 1") ferrules, and it is a whole lot easier to turn them down
with a 2"x42" linen belt than a 1"x42" belt because I can cover the entire
ferrule at once. I'd like to be able to find a 2"x42" Scotchbrite
belt in addition to the 1"x42"...Checked Wholesale Tool and Grainger, and no
luck so far. I know mine is going to break at some point, not
sure what I'll do then.

Does anyone have a source for 1” X 42” Scotchbrite sanding
belts? I’ve use the 30” ones in the past but since getting a 42”
belt sander last Spring, I haven’t found anything that I like quite as
well for certain types of jobs and can’t seem to locate any in
42”. In particular, I like the Scotchbrite belts for taking the
paint off of graphite shafts and putting the finishing touches on bore
thrus.
Jeff, I Have one that won't fit on my machine, it's
too thick. I have a
sears/craftsman.
