As you say, windows has so many automatic things it would seem hard if not impossible to sort out all the files that would have to loaded to a write accessible drive to make it workable. OTOH, my latest computer came with recovery CDs that reloads the original system completely onto a hard drive. Very slow but headed in the right direction. Could probably make a bootable CD and download to a ram drive as Sean suggested. Haven't investigated speed of latest CD drives. Maybe DVD would be a lot faster?
However aren't there MS type networks where the stations download their OS from the server when they boot as Sean and SHinch suggest? Wife and dog want to know when are we headed for the beach! We're wintering in Texas so have to keep my priorities straight. Golf courses are pretty flooded but will be playing next week in 7x degree weather.
