Mike, since this /these posts started out on ShopTalk I feel that they should be answered on ShopTalk. Yes when I start building a set of clubs, but because of my failing health I'm not that much involved w/clubmaking as I used to, I align all shafts at the 12:00 position for the hard spine. I like to start out this way because when you add in the other factors like flex or torque into the equation things can get a little mixed up. After I deliver the clubs I always try to do it at a driving range or play around with the customer so that i can see just how he's hitting/swinging the clubs. The one thing that I always did though was not even look at the customer's ball flight until he's/she's hit at least 30 balls. Because it takes about 30 hit's / swings hitting a golf ball to stretch out their fingers there is no way in hell that any good clubmaker can tell what is happening during a swing until the fingers have been allowed to naturaly stretch themselves out. Even when doing a regrip I tell the customer to go to the driving range before I fit the new grips. I have a pretty good idea as to the flex / torque before I build the sets because I have them hit a demo for about 20 minutes at the range or if it's a little late in the evening but still plenty of light out in my back yard, the 12th hole. But during the build not all shafts will come in exactly like the demo, plus now with SA2000, which by the way our host John now handles, I can pull a shaft / move the spine in about 5 to 8 minutes. It is only after I've seen the customer hitting the ball & watching his swing path will I even attempt to realign any given shafts. I know that takes a lot of your time but that's what we get the big bucks for isn't it. You may figure this is all a waste of your time but the look and feeling I receive from my customers is Priceless. Plus I must be doing something right because a lot of the Ass't pro's in the area used my shop to pass their PGA clubfitting tests & the local USGA / Senior PGA Pro send me a lot of his customers to be fitted by me.
I hope that this explains my position on Flex, Torque & Spines.
RK
