I know that pretty much any .370 shaft will work in a putter. How much
difference does one type of shaft make vs. another, i.e., stepped vs
stepless, or a shaft labeled for putters vs. a regular iron shaft. Any
recommendations?
Any Iron shaft will work. Stepped or stepless is by looks only. The key is to cut the length by removing material from the TIP. On stepless shafts first mark where on the shaft it tapers larger than .370" on stepped shafts you will find that you won't get to the first step. Trim to final playing length from the butt. You can easily get a 35" putter without having to cut the butt at all. You can also try a graphite shaft. A pullout from any club will work nicely!
Many times shafts sold as "putter" shafts are rejected iron shafts anyway!
