Jeremy,

Ha! Another one of those miracle golfing breakthroughs that didn't pan out
in the long run. About 1995, big butts were big and everybody was trying
them in every kind of club, even putters. A few players, really liked them
and still do, but as time went on most players found them to be slice
machines. I tried several and used a bunch in clubs for friends who also
wanted to try them. My experience with big butts was that the balance point
was too low for my higher trajectories and the butt end was so light, my
hands just flew through the shot, the head lagged behind and I had little
feeling for control. I had a really difficult time getting the head
square...even though I had my timing tuned to longer drivers with high
swingweights. The best big butt I tried was a Mars CVP-865. (Incidentally, I
still consider Mars' $15, normal butt, 74 gram, 49" CVP-150 S long driver
shaft, the best feeling and performing long driver shaft I've ever played
when I could handle a swingweight of E6 on a 48" driver...much better than
the Penleys and Aldilas of the time, though the Longwood 50/50 which came
out a couple of years later was almost as good.) I have a senior friend who
still has CVP-865 big butts on his fairway woods and hits them OK for a 72
year-old. They proved as durable as he is. :-) I still have a GS Carbonstick
OVB-86 I used back then and keep in my pull-outs for grins (if anybody needs
one).
