Cub,

It's been a while since I used a tube-type spinefinder, but as I remember when I had both Colin's and my NF2, the spine locations were about the same with Colin's as with the NF2. The NF2 uses 4 ABEC 5 skateboard bearings on each of three self-adjusting bearing arms and has 6" of butt exposed on a 46" wood shaft and about 9" between the butt bearing arm and the center bearing arm. I have seen a few graphite shafts with spiralling spines through the flex area of the shaft, but they are the exception...maybe 1 in a hundred for me. Of course, on a steel shaft and almost every Type 1, the spinefinder is locating the shaft's point of residual bend. That should be the same on any spinefinder, I think.

Bernie,

The instructions are odd, as compaired to the Mark IV.  The device is ten inches long and the instructions state to allow four inches to protrude from the bottom.  Then he has you pull up and rotate versus pull down and rotate.  I guess it is machs nichts but different.  Would the indications be the same since the first 14 inches of the butt section are removed from the equation?

Tom,

Nope. Colin's Mark IV (am guessing at the model number, but used to have one) is basically a tube-type spinefinder...two circular bearings enclosed in a tube with a shaped and angled piece of wood attached to the tube underneath, to hold the spinefinder in a vise. The third circular bearing has a short chain attached and is used to pull down the tip. It's a well-made, sensitive spinefinder, includes all instructions and has a reasonable price.

If you want to build a spinefinder, I think the Neufinder1 can do a little more for about the same money and a Neufinder2, in addition to spinefinding, can also accurately match a set of shafts faster than with a frequency meter. The Neufinder4, plans soon to be released, will be even better.
