This is an excerpt copied from the 8/7/04 Star Tribune newspaper:
The only player who probably didn't think so was tour veteran Jim Colbert, and that's because he played his entire round putting with a sand wedge or 3-wood after his putter blade fell off the shaft on the first hole because it was defective. Colbert bade Stadler farewell after three-putting that opening hole, but Stadler said he convinced his playing partner to stay because "you've got nothing else to do today".
Stadler putted with alternative clubs two consecutive weeks on tour in California last season, first after his putter "slipped out of my hand and ended up 100 yards down in a canyon" and then after two failed experimental rounds with a belly putter inspired him to hand the worthless thing to a young fan in the gallery.
