Good recommendation.
I do not have a drill press, but am saving this post for when I do.

Tom,

But the only thing wrong with one of those is that you also lose HP to your
motor. Like if you were using a .75 HP motor and you installed one of those
you would lose more then 1/2 of your available HP, like 1/2 of .75 HP would
equate to .375 HP really not enough to ream properly with but in all
actuallity you would lose around 1/4 of the available HP, upfront, that you
started out with by just installing one of those on your motor. Your
motor would start out at around a .562 HP motor not a .75 HP. So if you
were to use the speed reducer and lets say you wanted o run your spindle
from 320 down to 160, 1/2 of the present spindle speed you would in essance
be using only about a little over a 1/4 HP not the .5 HP min requirrment for
reaming, that you realy would need to ream out a hole.

If anybody wants to really reduce the spindle speed on their drill press I
would recommend that you get a TEK CATALOGUE, and look under "FAN MOTOR[s]",
and purchase a half speed motor, from 1725 RPM"s down to 850 RPM, like I
did, and install it, plus you get your .5 HP Motor, min required for
reaming, but you can also hook it up s a 220 V single phase which give you a
lots more torque,no more HP but around twice the torque.

Something to think about

RK

Buy a variable power supply, works like a rheostat. You will find many uses
for it.

Increase the diameter of the pulley that drives the chuck. You might have a
clearence problem but you can cut away part of the metal shield (for safety,
cage the pulley after the modification). It's tough to get a multispeed
pulley like the one supplied with the drill press but you can get drill
presses that can be modified for $40 and designate that tool for reaming
heads.
