GEORGE:

If your reference to the different material faces means our model 770CFE
irons, these heads already hit the ball higher for any given loft
because of their thin, variable thickness face design and its ability to
generate a higher launch angle and higher ball speed. Whenever you get
a higher launch angle for any given loft in an iron design, you
automatically get a steeper angle of descent of the ball to the ground,
which in turn means stopping the ball more quickly. So I would hesitate
doing micro grooves on a design like the 770s because you could
definitely end up with having to strengthen the lofts a pretty fair
amount just to keep the increased spin from throwing the ball even
higher just to hit the ball the same distance as before doing the micro
scorelines. Milled face + micro grooves would be better used on a
design that did not increase launch angle from its weight distribution
design, and as you say, I can see this being done only on the 7 through
wedges where you could decrease the loft a little and not have it affect
the golfer's ability to get the ball well up to fly and stop.

Thanks Tom,

They sure are a sweet set of wedges!

I thought that you might be able to insert the tight groove face in your
your computer design set that has the different material face inserts.
Even if it was only in the "money" clubs say 7-PW. Most guys want the
stop and drop type shot on the short irons, so I am not sure how much
they would care about a small decrease in distance.

If you can find someone with an old set of the CNC 1000 irons
that I designed for Dynacraft back in the late 1980s, that was a full
set of irons with all CNC machining on the face. It did not incorporate
smaller and closer scorelines as do the CX Micro wedges, though. I've
been thinking about the old CNC 1000 irons lately since doing the CX
Micro wedges, but there are a number of things to really test and
consider before doing that on ALL of the irons in a set. For some
golfers, more spin on the irons means a higher trajectory AND a little
less distance. So there would have to be a decent amount of work done
to determine how best to do this and what lofts to incorporate to make
sure the spin enhancement still works on its own without causing any
problems to trajectory and distance for the golfer.

I have been selling quite a few of Tom's new design CX micro
groove wedges. They are some of the best wedge design I have had the
pleasure of selling. I now have a customer that wants a complete set of
irons just like the wedges. Anyone know if Tom is planning an making an
iron set with the Micro-groove face design?
