Thanks Ed, I will look into this as well.

Paul,
There were discussions a few years ago about how to build a Momentus
iron. Perhaps they could help you with your project?

Do an Internet search on building your own Momentus. The basic idea is
to take a 1/2-inch round bar of steel and use it for the shaft. You
build up the grip to .600 and turn/grind down the tip to .370. When you
put a standard head and grip on it you something that is virtually
identical to the real deal.

Hi Guys,

I've recently been looking at the Momentus and Maximus weighted practice drivers. Anything to help my pitiful swing! The problem is the cost. I figured I could make one myself for a fraction of the price. The Momentus weighs 600 grams with a 350 gram head. The Maximus weighs 1020 grams overall but there is no information on the head weight. The Momentus ratio is 53% head weight and 47 % shaft weight. I thought I would follow that ratio but split the difference in overall weight for a total of 840 grams. My friend at golfsmith attempted to do a swingweight measurement, but it was off the scale. I'll have to assume that the ratio is correct and scientifically derived. Golfsmith has their Viper Ti 464s on closeout. They have four weight ports which gives easy access to the cavity of the driver head. I had a few ideas for the extra weighting there. One would be to simply fill it with water, although if I go with my original design, as the head weighs 200 grams stock, it would take 8.54 ounces of water which probably be too much volume for the head cavity. I haven't measured it yet, so that is just a guess. Water may tend to rust from the inside, so that may not be such a good idea. Maybe oil or anti-freeze would be a good replacement. Another idea that I had was to use led pellets spent from my pellet gun and then fill the cavity with urethane foam. That should keep the weights in place, but could eventually come loose with range ball impact. Someone had mentioned rat glue in a previous post, but I don't know where to find it in the Dallas area. Silicon glue may be another option. Maximus claims to have a subtle shifting method which aids in clubhead release. I don't know what that means. Perhaps liquid plus led weights would produce something similar. I bought the heaviest steel shaft that golfsmith had in stock. I thought I would use the pellets in the shaft as well, spreading out three loads in the middle and towards either end. I'd hold them in place with some silicon or epoxy soaked cloth plugs. Has anyone else ever considered making a heavy practice driver? Any better ideas would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,
