An excellent write-up Dave. I didn't design instruments (sensors on a couple of occasions) but I used them a lot and a similar discussion often comes up when you start talking about the definition of 'allowable error' which also includes the repeatability of the process you are measuring and it's randomness as well as the measurement process and its randomness. Its a fascinating topic.

The old bullseye also gets used for discussions involving changing the test requirements to match the results, or "moving the target". Experimental work is so much fun.

From time to time, I react to a post by insisting that accuracy is not the same thing as precision -- or sometimes that resolution is not the same thing as precision. As someone who has been designing instruments for over 45 years, that is a sticking point with me.

I finally got around to writing my long-promised article highlighting the differences among accuracy, precision, and resolution. You can find it at <http://www.tutelman.com/golf/measure/precision.php>

Warning: now that the article is there, I'm going to refer to it the next time I react to a confusion between accuracy and precision.

Happy New Year!
