I just saw this article in Technology Review today.

Carbon nanotubes make up some of the fibers in a few premium shafts today, and may become a lot more important in the future if material cost and manufacturing permit. While today they might be criticized as "pixie dust" (I think I heard that term from David Dugally), they might become the real deal a few years down the road -- offering considerably lighter shafts for the same stiffness and strength.

So it will be worth keeping track of things like this article, which suggest that nanotubes may become "the new asbestos". Researchers have been able to induce mesothelioma (the asbestos-caused cancer) in mice with injections of nanotubes. Experiments where the nanotubes were only breathed were less dramatic, but still worth watching.

All this suggests that clubmakers will need to be aware of this research. Tip-trimming a lot of nanotube-based shafts may -- or may not -- turn out to have the same effect that working with asbestos does.

"Be careful out there."
