Moe has it right and you can use paper towel instead of cotton cloth with good 
success. Apply little to no pressure for best results.

Acetone on a cotton cloth will shape and shine.  Soak the cloth and rub like 
you were shining a shoe.  If the ferrule gets a little dull with the "shine", 
acetone on the cloth gently wiping will bring the shine up.
