There is nothing in Shorewall that knows or cares what type of hardware you have. All Shorewall needs is the name of the interface. If you have the 'modem' working without Shorewall, then type 'ip route ls' and look at where your default route goes (it should be the last entry listed). The device named in that route is the one that you want to configure as your 'net' interface.
