Tom can confirm definitively, but I don't see any significant mention of
"eth" while grepping the source code?  My (limited and probably
wrong...) understanding is that you can use (presumably any?) interface
name that you like?

Did you encounter some problem trying to use your interface names? 
Perhaps post that error and that might explain that it's some other issue?
