shorewall

It's not unheard of in a distributed firewall mgmt tool -- FWBuilder has had
RCS-integration for ages -- and it's quite convenient.
That is can be managed outside of shorewall is obvious,
"Can be done, of course, completely external to shorewall."
and there are, indeed, countless options.
