directory structure within the sidebar?
We've been considering the latter: http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/1594

Ah, don't do that. In my opinion that would destroy the good and
well-sorted experience the user gets - cause this folder view will
always remind him how messed up his pictures are stored. I think you
don't need this folder view in Shotwell - if one wants to browse the
directories, one can still use his favourite file manager...
It's clear that some users care about where photos are stored and others
don't. The long-term plan for Shotwell is to add several more sidebar
trees which the user can enable or disable as they like. If you don't
care about events and only want to browse through your photos according
to their on-disk location, you'll be able to hide the event tree and
turn on the folder tree. Conversely, a user who only wants to use
events will be able to show only that tree. We may also add trees which
will let you browse photos by
- geolocation: country, state, city and so on
(http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/1473)
- import rolls (http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/1793)
- time: like events, but doesn't allow renaming/splitting/merging
(http://trac.yorba.org/ticket/2747)
- cameras
and so on. I hope this will make everyone happy. :)
