Shotwell locked up while waiting for the shotwell-video-thumbnailer process. And yes, you can launch this process manually. Something like this: /usr/bin/shotwell-video-thumbnailer test-video.mpg > test.jpg Where test-video.mpg is the video in question. Do you know what file it was that it choked on? You should find this in the shotwell.log file as mentioned in the FAQ.
