The log seems to be missing some important information, but the stack trace
is a dead giveaway. Shotwell locked up while waiting for the
shotwell-video-thumbnailer process.  And yes, you can launch this process
manually. Something like this:

/usr/bin/shotwell-video-thumbnailer test-video.mpg > test.jpg

Where test-video.mpg is the video in question.

Do you know what file it was that it choked on?  You should find this in the
shotwell.log file as mentioned in the FAQ.  If there's any way you could
send me the video that may help in debugging.
