I'm not sure either of these are use-cases of a photo manager.
Importing based on file extension or only certain metadata of certain
photos sounds outside of the scope of what we're doing with Shotwell.
I'm *certain* that these are within the use-case of a photo manager.

I'd like to see an "advanced" button in the import window that allows
stuff like extension filtering.

I agree this would be useful.  Indeed, we have an existing ticket for this:

A simple tickbox for "Remove existing tags" or something would allow one
to solve the 'overzealous friend' problem. I occasionally have this
problem with photos friends send me too.
