To store my photo I use Rapid-Photo-downloader, is much more flexible
than Shotwell to import task (that's the main and unique task for RPD
so...).
There's an option that permits to import photo from external disk to
some path (your huge disk). So I think you should do:

1. Change Shotwell library path to new one (uncheck "Watch library")
2. Use RPD to copy the photos to the huge HD
3. Recheck "Watch Library" in Shotwell

In this case Shotwell should recognize the new path for the photos
already in the DB and your tags/vote/ecc. should be save.

Anyway backup your .shotwell folder before start :)
