The short answer, I believe, is that it is do-able but unsupported.
If you look at the archive for this mailing list for this month you
should find a few posts by Colin Law where he describes how he's being
doing just that.
I'm currently trying this out myself but in my case I'm just interested
in having a 'read-only' version on my netbook. I use rsync on my images
and ~/.shotwell directory although I'm having a couple of strange
performance issues that I need to have a look at.
