Hi Cody, Although we can't officially provide support for users on anything but Gnome or Unity, there might be a few things you can try.
First, you may be helped by migrating to the latest version, if you haven't done so already. You can find out what version you have by navigating to the 'Help' menu in the main window and choosing 'About'. The most recent version at the time of this writing is 0.11.2, and may contain a fix for the issue you're seeing. If your distro doesn't have this version in its repositories, you may want to try building from source - please see http://yorba.org/shotwell/install/#source for details on how to do this. I hope this helps you out, but if you have any other questions, please feel free to write to this mailing list again and add the output from the command 'uname -a' to the message - perhaps someone has a similar setup to yours and may be able to provide further assistance.
