If, instead of using Ctrl-T, I make sure that the tag is displayed in the left pane, then drag-and-drop the selected images to the tagname, the tagging is carried out properly. So perhaps the problem is nothing to do with the tagname (I'd wondered if embedded commas and brackets might be illegal), and something to do with the processing of text in the Ctrl-T dialogue.
