Rather than importing into Shotwell try using the Ubuntu file manager (nautilus) to copy a couple of dozen pictures from the SD card to a folder on disk. If that also fails then it is not a Shotwell specific problem. In the past I have had similar problems with SD card readers. In my case the problem was worked around by plugging the camera into PC and then Shotwell worked perfectly.
