My suggestion was to not show the box again next time.

Maybe under edit->preferences->library tab->importing add a radio button or drop down with three options, "in place", "copy" and "ask me every time"?

The biggest issue I could see is that doing a one-off import then becomes slightly annoying for users that usually, but not always, do one of the two.

A possible solution to that would be having file->import from folder expand to the "import in place" and "copy files" options, if import from folder remained click-able then it could perform the default action:
file
├── import_from_app
└── import_from_folder
    ├── copy_files
    └── in_place

My only concern here is that if we do offer that checkbox, how would the user be able to un-check it? I assume that your suggestion is not to show the dialog box again if it's checked.

Didn't find a feature request for this, but I've been known to use the wrong search terms before, so asking the list:

Some users (myself included) always select the same option for "import in place" or "copy photos" in the import dialogue. Imports could be made slightly less complicated for these users by including a checkbox to "remember this choice next time".
