Problem solved! For some reason I didn't have all the upgrades I needed
and in this case it was upgrading to the Linux 3.0 kernel. After I did
that all sorts of things started working much better, I don't know why
the distribution upgrade didn't get that in the first place. At least I
think that is what helped. I've been tweaking all afternoon into the
night and finally seem to have a functioning system again.
