I don't know that this is the problem, but we've seen situations in the past where Nautilus' mime type associations were a mess and needed to be reset. Read this for more information and possible workarounds:

It is a PITA but the problem at the end is that gvfs-open does not work. That again comes from the fact that it seems that no default mime type is set. And not even the maintainer could answer me what I have to do .... Furtunately my former laptop died on me and now with the new one it is working.
