Hi Michele, The Shotwell scanning and monitoring code is pretty good about logging what it's doing. So in this case it would be really helpful to have a log file. Or rather, two log files: one log file generated when Shotwell is run with the --no-startup-progress option specified and another log file generated when Shotwell is run without any additional options. Once you've generated these log files, mail 'em to [email protected] and we on the Shotwell dev team will have a look at them.
