It really does look like a compositor or video driver problem.  On Ubuntu there's the X.org Edger's PPA, which has latest-and-greatest drivers for a lot of video cards.  Have you tried looking for newer drivers?  Or, if they're open-source drivers, have you tried the closed source variety?  Not that they need to stay installed, but it might give you a clue where the problem lies (and therefore who to report the problem to).
