The reply took a while I guess but yes, the problem still exists.

Some imports the thumbnails are mostly grey but some imports they are
mostly good.

I don't think I have seen this problem with files that are directly copied
from camera but only the ones I have converted from h264 to x264 to add
date metadata (with avconv, like 'avconv -y -i oldname.mts -metadata
creation_time="$DATE" -c:a copy -c:v libx264 -crf 18 -preset veryfast
newname.mp4'.

The package is installed:

ii  gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad:i386             1.0.6-1ubuntu1
                              i386         GStreamer plugins from the "bad"
set

And as always: nautlius/nemo always produces good thumbnails from these
files.
