Hi.

I'm not a dev and i don't know much about it, but did you try to enable swap?
I had the problem of freezing the phone, too, because programs were running 
out of memory.

( if you need help with enabling swap:
    http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/SwapSpace )

To read logs you could maybe take out the SD-card and put it in a cardreader 
(don't know whether other logfiles than /var/log/lastlog are present after 
rebooting, so this might help).
