Thanks for your attachment and information. I now think that this file
was the problem. I was smart enough to save this file before scratching
the installation (but not keen enough to reset this file to my saved
values :-( ). If I now diff the file of the no audio situation I see
that the the value for 5:'Mono Playback Volume' is now 88 (working), and
was droped to 3 (no audio), and your is 122. When I was with 'no audio' I
ofcourse tried the slider in the GUI with no luck, and you see that it
does not changed the file gsmhandset, it got stuck as 3.

Next time I will reset this file to known good values from the terminal
or SSH session.

In general, I already had the feeling that the audio slider does not
change the file, but that the real audio values are somewhat based on
the gsmhandset file, maybe with some small modification for the values 
used in the call.

Can someone shed a bit light on what the sliders are doing in real and
how they influence the values stored in the gsmhandset file?
